Nicole Richie is famous for doing nothing except being a party girl, but she can add diva to her CV after last night’s MTV Australia Video Music Awards.

Sources told Confidential that Richie was the only presenter who refused to take part in the dress rehearsal, not leaving her dressing room all day.

Not even boyfriend Joel Madden, from Good Charlotte, could cajole her outside.

Richie is being paid big bucks in appearances fees, so organisers expected her to do the job properly.

Other bigger names such as Pink and host Fergie took part in the rehearsal without complaint.

We also hear that her management had diva demands regarding her dressing room — unlike the slight star, her room had to be large.

Richie’s trip hasn’t been a happy one — she upset fans when she arrived at Sydney Airport on Saturday, refusing to sign autographs for many who had waited up to 48 hours for a glimpse of their idol.

Fans of Nicole Richie were left in tears after The Simple Life celebrity ignored them when she arrived in Australia yesterday.

Richie is in Sydney to attend the MTV Australia Video Music Awards.

However her fans were bitterly disappointed when her security team resorted to aggressive tactics to keep them at arm’s length.

Fan Bianca Valodian woke up at 4am to catch a glimpse of Richie and was devastated to miss out on getting an autograph from the tiny star.

“We haven’t slept in two days,” the 17-year-old year 12 student from Frenchs Forest said. “It’s pretty heartbreaking.”

Qantas staff were also underwhelmed by Richie, who was rude to the cabin crew on her flight from Los Angeles. “She’s not very nice,” a female crew member said. “She has no charm.” By contrast, her fiance Joel Madden and his brother, Benji, of Good Charlotte, happily posed for photographs with fans and signed autographs at Sydney Airport after flying in from Auckland after Richie.

“It’s great to be back in Australia,” said Benji, who was later reunited with his fiance, Australian singer Sophie Monk, at an MTV press conference.

When asked about the scrum at the airport, Richie made no apology. “You know what, I had just woken up so it was definitely a rush but, you know, we got through it,” she said.

But behind-the-scene moves by Australian Fashion Week to claim the fashionista as a star import for their front row has frayed nerves of MTV organisers.

Confidential understands Richie plans to holiday in Australia for seven days after the MTV gig, which will coincide with the staging of the local fashion industry’s annual showcase.

With a number of big name designers confirming they are not showing this year – including star-drawcard Charlie Brown, who has previously picked up the bill for the celebrity imports – parade organisers have apparently been left scrambling to up the event’s star power.

But an MTV spokeswoman confirmed yesterday the network was “in negotiations with Nicole” to appear for their event, well before news surfaced she was being “shopped around as a celebrity guest for designers at Fashion Week”.

“She’s got nothing to do with Fashion Week and if she’s here she’ll be here for MTV,” she said.

Fashion sources have told Confidential the American socialite had been “offered at a price” last week to appear as a VIP guest in their front row.

“We did it outside, so that was a lot of fun. It probably wasn’t that fun for (the campers), but it was definitely interesting. It was something that I never thought I would do before,” said Richie. Paris indicated she would rather milk cows.

The pair spoke briefly about how they reconciled their differences. They insist that the feud was blown out of proportion by the media. Neither would say what triggered the rift but rumour says that Hilton caught Richie showing people her sex tape.

A birthday call from Paris Hilton to Nicole Richie ended the stars’ long-running feud. The socialites, now best friends again, fell out under mysterious circumstances in 2005. Insiders claim the friendship turned sour when Richie screened Hilton’s One Night In Paris sex tape at a party.

Both have refused to reveal the details of their split, but Hilton has come forward with information about the phone call she made to end the hostility last September.

She says, “It was Nicole’s birthday and I really missed her, and I just decided to pick up the phone and call her.”

Speaking to news show Extra, Richie adds, “We just got together that night and it was like there was never anything that happened. “It was weird, like we had seen each other yesterday.”
