Joel took Nicole and Harlow to the California desert this weekend for a surprise family holiday.
The Richie-Madden clan headed to the Palm Springs area for the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, a three-day event headlined by performers including Prince, Jack Johnson and Roger Waters.
“[Nicole] hasn’t been able to do a whole lot over the year, so we’re having a little family trip,” Madden told People at the BPM Hpnotiq Smurf House, where he DJ’d a festival pre-party Saturday afternoon.

Nicole Richie and Joel Madden enjoyed a relatively rare night out Wednesday, but baby Harlow was never far from their thoughts.
Richie – looking fit and fab in a short black dress – and the Good Charlotte frontman headed to a star-studded dinner in honor of designer Charlotte Ronson at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel’s Dakota Restaurant.
And the proud papa couldn’t help boasting about his three-month-old bundle of joy. “It’s been so crazy,” he told the VIP table, where fellow guests included Lindsay Lohan and her constant companion, DJ Samantha Ronson. “Man, but it’s great.”

Nicole arrived at her court mandated driving school in Los Angeles yesterday afternoon. Nicole would usually get picked up by a driver, but now that Joel is back from tour, he can take her, and so he did.

Nicole, who gave birth to the couple’s first child Harlow Winter in January, has swapped her baggy sweatpants for lacy Agent Provocateur lingerie.
A source said: “They are thrilled to be parents but things have turned less romantic between them. Before Joel went on tour with Good Charlotte they were exhausted from sleep deprivation, which killed any sexual desire.

A few days ago Nicole and Joel were seen at an airport in Washington with their beautiful little daughter Harlow, strapped to mommy’s chest. Nicole and Harlow have been flying to different cities with Joel, who is touring the U.S. with his rock Good Charlotte. The cute trio were snapped as they walked through the airport (look at little Harlow - She can’t take her eyes off her daddy), and at a newsstand where they looked at magazines. Harlow had a little cry as they were browsing, but Nicole comforted her and she quickly stopped. These pictures are adorable! And Nicole looks so cute when she’s all dressed down and casual.
