Lionel Richie is speaking out for the first time about daughter Nicole’s impending jail sentence and her pregnancy. Nicole has been ordered to serve four days in prison for her DUI arrest last December.
“My daughter has made some mistakes in her life and has accepted responsibility for her actions,†Lionel tells Usmagazine.com. “She has not blamed others for her problems and is growing up very quickly, albeit in the heat of the media spotlight. “
The singer says he raised Nicole to take responsibility for her actions.
“My father taught me to stand straight and take whatever punishment or hardships were the result of my actions and I am proud that I was able to hand that philosophy down to my daughter,†says Lionel.
On Thursday, Nicole, 25, announced on ABC’s Good Morning America that she is four months pregnant with her first child.
“Her pregnancy has given her a new perspective on life in general,†Lionel tells Usmagazine.com.
He added: “In spite of what has happened, I continue to love her and cherish our relationship.â€
Nicole Richie will serve her four-day jail sentence at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, Calif. – the same jail where Paris Hilton did her time.
“[Richie's] attorney contacted us and indicated she wants to do her time there,” said Steve Whitmore, spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, adding that no surrender date was given.
Whitmore couldn’t say whether Richie, who’s four months pregnant, would be housed at the facility’s medical ward. “That’s all determined by our medical staff upon her arrival,” said Whitmore.
If not in the medical facility, Richie, 25, could likely be placed in a segregated unit for high-profile inmates, as Hilton initially was, and locked up for 23 hours a day.
Nicole on the past year: “I don’t consider it one of the worst. I think this was a blessing in disguise. This year has been full of lessons learned and soul-searching. … I will be really happy once I have done my jail time. I can start fresh.â€
Nicole on feeling remorse: “I was watching CNN about a month ago, and they happened to be talking about young people driving under the influence. They were flashing little kids (on the screen) who were killed by drunk drivers, and it broke my heart. It was a big wake-up call.â€
Nicole on her sentence: “It was a fair, standard sentence. I expected that.â€
Nicole on comparisons with Hilton’s sentence: “We weren’t charged with the same thing. We had different judges. This isn’t a popularity contest, and it’s not up to people to compare my case with Paris’.â€
Nicole on why she was on a painkiller when she was arrested: “I have really bad menstrual cramps.â€
Nicole on whether she has taken drugs since December: “No.â€
Nicole on her favorite foods: “Sushi. I’m not sure how great that is for me. I also love pizza; I’m a junk-food eater by nature.â€
While Nicole Richie and boyfriend Joel Madden are keeping mum about her pregnancy, a courtroom sketch from Richie’s DUI hearing today is proving that a picture is worth a thousand words on the subject.
Drawn standing in front of the judge, Richie contritely holds her hands behind her back, thrusting her baby bump forward for the world to see.
As Us Weekly reported in its July 16 issue, Richie and boyfriend Madden discovered that they were expecting when Richie took a home pregnancy test in early May. She is now estimated to be nearly four months pregnant with their first child. A friend of the couple tells Us that they “both wanted kids and decided this was a good time.”
With her stylishly loose-fitting Moschino dress unable to hide the truth even in sketch-form, we think it’s also a good time for Richie and Madden to come clean!

Nicole Richie pleaded guilty to DUI and was sentenced to four days in jail on Friday in a Glendale, Calif., courthouse.
She also agreed to serve a three-year probation term, and must enroll in an alcohol education program. She was also fined $2,048.
During the hearing, Los Angeles County Commissioner Steven Lubell admonished Richie, saying: “Someone could’ve gotten killed. You need to understand that driving under the influence is extremely dangerous.”
Richie was given the option of serving her time in a paid city jail, which is seen as a cushier facility than a county jail. She was given no surrender date, but must complete her jail time before Sept. 28.
Richie, with her hair pulled back and wearing a loose-fitting black dress, showed up 10 minutes early for her 8:30 a.m. (PST) hearing, arm-in-arm with her boyfriend, Joel Madden, who was also dressed in all black.
Prosecutor Carolina Lugo said outside the courtroom that Richie’s reported (and unconfirmed) pregnancy had nothing to do with the plea deal. “That was not discussed and we have no information about that.”
